    What a great looking building, at least from the interior shots on this site. And very good to see that there is interest in enabling the market to fulfill its role in the 21stC. I really do believe that the decline in markets has bottomed out, and that their function will be needed more than ever now that issues of local food, quality food, food miles, an alternative to bland supermarket shopping, shopping as a social experience etc have all started to shift into focus. I’m heartened to see this initiative, but somewhat dismayed by the lack of interest manifested by lack of comment! Cyber space is too full of well meaning websites, and I don’t think they hit the spot that marketing people think they do!

    Please take note – in all the associated web pages regarding the development of Tynemouth Station no mention of the Supermarket which will be built at the other end to the proposed library etc. In the most recent plans no space for a theatre either. We have been conned into this. Sure we all want the Station to be renovated, that is well overdue but really, do we need another Supermarket ?

    Oh yes and one other gobbet of info. One of Tynemouth Ward councillors is on the board of Station Developments.
    Say no more. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. Know what I mean.

    The Supermarket is a key feature in the viability of the stations regeneration as without it the whole scheme would not be viable. It is referred to in the proposals as the retail unit or anchor tenant.
    In the planning application there is no doubt about the description – it is described as retail. There is also a substantial retail impact assessment informing and supporting this element of the planning application.
    Those who object to the retail element but still wish to have the station renovated don’t come up with a counter proposals that would fill the funding gap.
    We have been open to suggestions – especially during the public consultation process. It is so easy to say I don’t like that part of the proposal but that attitude is not credible unless it is followed up with proposals that would replace the element being opposed.

    I would also like to confirm that North Tyneside Council are joint owners of the station company and therefore do have directors appointed to the companies board of directors.
    That is only right and proper and gives the council good representation and direction of the companies affairs. The station company is only one of the many outside bodies that this and other councils have representation or directorships.

    I hope that the above has clearly clarified some of the issues raised.
